Research and writing

Research

At Re:State, I write about how to make governments work better. My work includes:

  • Everythingism: an essay (on how policymakers forgot about trade-offs).

  • Making the grade: Prioritising performance in Whitehall (on the issues of identifying and managing talent and performance in Westminster)

  • Getting the machine learning: Scaling AI in public services (on the failures of government to use new digital technology, and how to overcome those to adopt AI)

  • Byte-sized budgeting: funding digital services in government

Other writing

I've written for publications including:

  •  City AM: Will Whitehall get its own Elon Musk? New government must feel the need for speed, and In defence of Treasury brain.
  • Civil Service World:  The civil service has a people problem
  • CapX:  Labour has dodged the hard choices on doctors' pay
  • Digital Frontier:  Scaling the state

I also regularly contribute to Re:State's blog, including:

  •  I believe in the Reform Fairy
  •  Policy memes (and where to find them)
  •  Data: a problem shared
  •  Gaslighting the government
  •  "The technology isn't the hard part"
